Abstract
An extensive thrombosis of inferior vena cava (IVC) was treated by endovascular intervention. About 20 cm sized hepatic hemangioma was responsible for the obstruction of IVC, which consequently caused extensive IVC thrombosis. A 20-hour overnight urokinase infusion totaling 2,200,000 units using infusion catheter with multiple-side-holes resulted in successful thrombolysis. Because the hepatic hemangioma was nonresectable, a self expanding stent was inserted in the intrahepatic IVC to maintain the venous flow and to prevent recurrent thrombosis. The patient showed marked improvement in symptoms without recurrence over the duration of 3 months. Endovascular interventional treatment can be considered as an effective treatment modality in managing obstruction and thrombosis of IVC.
